About the European Inventor Award & Young Inventors Prize
The European Inventor Award is the EPO’s largest annual communications activity. This project involves both an intense communication campaign that spans the entire year, and the organisation of the event itself which takes place every year in June / early July. At various stages of the campaign and during the event, the audio-visual material plays an essential role to maximise the outreach of the campaign among the public at large. The
webpages of the European Inventor Award contain information about all past finalists since 2006.
The Award aims to promote awareness of the importance of patents and inventions for the benefit of society and the European economy. It portrays individual inventors by putting forward the story behind their inventions. By promoting the 16 Award finalists – three in each of the four Award categories plus 3 winners of the Young Inventors Prize, the laureate of the Lifetime Achievement– and subsequently the six winners, the EPO provides concrete examples of how these inventors benefit society with their work, the relevance of their invention for the economy and society, and how it has contributed to creating jobs and advancing technology.
In 2022, the EPO decided to implement an additional category, the “Young Inventors Prize”, as younger generations play an essential role in shaping our common future, and acknowledging their potential is a goal at the EPO. There are 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, ranging from climate action and sustainable cities to quality education and zero hunger. The EPO acknowledges young innovators who use technology to develop solutions that will help reach these goals and positively impact our lives. Aimed at innovators aged 30 and under, it recognises problem-solving initiatives across all technical fields and offers a cash prize to the winner and two additional finalists.
An impression of the last in-person Award ceremony held in 2019 in Vienna can be gained from this video, an impression of the 2023 Award ceremony can be seen here.
The ceremony takes place every year in June / beginning of July but in exceptional cases the event may also take in May and takes place in a new European city. In recent years, especially since 2020, significant efforts have been undertaken to give the European Inventor Award (the Award) more visibility. The format of the event has been transferred from “closed” events aimed for selected participants (500-600 guests) to a fully global ceremony in a TV-like concept to reach the widest audience possible reaching around 30.000 viewers online. This has also led to substantial changes in the preparation and the execution of the Award.
All activities around the Award have been re-focused to attain the greatest possible media impact including social channels, thereby promoting the patent system and innovation as a whole, while generating positive exposure for the EPO. Also, promotion efforts to advertise the ceremony itself has been hugely increased to attract digital viewers. Similarly, the concept of the videos that are an integral role of the event, need to evolve according to the requirements of the event’s format. Over the last years the main target audience has shifted from the IP Community towards reaching out to younger generation and public at large. As a result, social channels became the most important distribution channels to promote the Award and all the finalists.
During ceremony in Malta (9 July 2024), the European Patent Office (EPO) will announce a new concept for the Award, starting in 2025. From next year onward, the Award will be held biennially (EIA and YIP) on rotational basis, with the upcoming edition focusing on young innovators below 30 years-old whose inventions address one or more United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2025 edition will be celebrated in Iceland in May 2025, marking the first of these newly biennial-focused awards, and the nominations period for all technological fields remains open from today July until the end of September 2024.
